Under the Weather

I felt pretty crummy yesterday and am still not back to full strength today - I suspect that I have a bit of a stomach bug...ugh.  It does seem curious that my bug came on the same day that Olin was meant to spend his first full day at school.  Perhaps it was God's way of giving me a reason not to be sad about missing my little buddy, because as much as I love that little one, I was in no condition to chase after him yesterday and was so grateful that there were others to do it.

But don't worry, I did not receive any special treatment from this lovely city of ours.  While I tried to drag my aching body to Olin's school yesterday afternoon to pick him up, a cyclist speeding toward me at an intersection yelled "wake-up!" as he blew past me - ah, NYC.

Luckily, I have two boys at home that took great care of me - Josh brought me the most beautiful flowers that smell wonderful and was super daddy as soon as he got home so that I could lay down for a little bit.  And then Olin, seemingly knowing that I wasn't feeling great, spontaneouslly leaned over and gave me the sweetest kiss on my cheek as we sat on the couch together for his nightly bottle of milk - if that doesn't make you feel better, I don't know what will.

Our big boy also did wonderful again in school yesterday and the full day in class was no problem for him.  He is really stealing the hearts of his teachers too.  During their nap time yesterday, apparently little mister woke up after just a half hour and then proceeded to sit in the other room with his teachers and talk and talk to them for over an hour while the other children slept.  They thought it was the funniest thing.  He is really embracing this school thing - this morning when I told him that it was time to go to school and asked him to get in his stroller, he jumped right in (and let me tell you, mr. independent has not loved his stroller lately) and then gave me a kiss on my nose as I buckled him in.  Once we got to school, he knew exactly where to go and knocked on his classroom door like he's been going there for months.  We really lucked out with this one.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Some photos from breakfast this morning - this guy has little interest in sitting in his booster seat while he eats anymore... such a big boy.

A Special Day

Today, September 13th, marks the 16th anniversary of the day that Josh and I started dating way back in 1996 at Purdue. It was the day that my life changed forever and I feel so blessed to have found such a wonderful partner in life. Joshua, I love you more than all the numbers and look so forward to all the future holds with you because if the last 16 years are any indication, it's going to be pretty great.

Over The Weekend

With all the excitement of school this week, I realized that I haven't yet posted pictures from last weekend.  We had a busy weekend with a family gathering at church Saturday morning, lunch and shopping in Union Square, a haircut from our friend Pat at Cozy's Cuts For Kids, and finally dinner at Hummus Kitchen on Saturday night just before the rain storms came through the city.  On Sunday, we enjoyed the return of beautiful weather with a picnic in Riverside Park with some good friends.

School update: yesterday our little one went to the park with his class where he wore a little reflective vest and held on to a rope along with his classmates as they walked from the school to the park.  I honestly can't believe that he was able to do that already and so wish that I could have been there to see it.  He also went through both of his backup outfits yesterday.  My goodness he is messy!

A Little Blue

One day in my prenatal yoga class, our instructor started the class as she always did with a discussion question and on this particular day she asked us what our most favorite thing was about being pregnant.  I remember that I didn't have to think for a minute about it - my immediate answer was that I loved having my little buddy with me all the time.  I don't know why, but that thought always provided me with this overwhelming sense of comfort.

Well today, as I was walking home from his school without him, I felt incredibly sad.  I know it's crazy - my goodness, I am picking him up at 1pm, and last year while I was in school I spent much of the day away from him, but inexplicably today it feels different.  Our apartment feels so empty without his little presence.

All this worrying about how Olin would do... looks like we should have worried more about how Olin's mommy would do.

A little photo from this morning...

More From School

It was another successful day at school!  Today, he spent two hours with his class - I stayed for a half hour and left for the other hour and a half.  Apparently our little guy did just fine without me and had so much fun during snack time (bananas rolled in yogurt and then in Cheerios - yum!) that he was in his "back-up outfit" when I arrived to pick him up.  I have a feeling that I am going to be doing a lot of laundry this school year.

Funnily, while most parents probably worry about how their little ones will react when they drop them off, I worry about how Olin will react when he has to leave.  How embarrassing to have the child that cries when his parents come to pick him up!  Luckily for me, our little guy has been great when he is there, but also just fine with leaving when it's been time for us to go.  Fingers crossed that continues!

Here are a few more photos from yesterday (the last of them, I promise).  After his successful first day at school, we went up to Columbia for a celebratory lunch at Community with Daddy.  Then we went to Bank Street Bookstore to find a special book for our big boy (which we have since read over and over again).  We ended the day as we always do when we have reason to celebrate in the Burgher house... with a champagne toast!  Well, Josh and I had champagne and Olin enjoyed some "special water".

First Day of School!

The weather in New York City could not have been lovelier for little mister's special day.  It felt like fall today and one might even call it perfect "first day of school" weather.

The school asked that only one parent accompany each child at school so not to crowd the teeny tiny classroom, but Josh did walk us there so that he was able to see our little guy off (and make sure that we got a few hundred pictures of him).

Once we arrived, Olin did wonderful... he was polite, engaged, funny, and he seemed to love every minute of it.  The school phases the children into the classroom gradually over the week so today he was in the classroom for just one hour with me sitting in the corner as a quiet observer, tomorrow he stays a little longer with me only there part of the time (but close by the rest of the time clutching my cell phone in case he needs me) and then hopefully, by Wednesday, all of the little ones are up for the challenge of a full day in school without mom and dad.  It seems so quick to me, but I know he will do great!

I know it's a lot of pictures below (and there is more to come), but I am so proud of our little boy I couldn't resist.  Today is definitely a day that we will remember forever.
