We decided to go out on Long Island again, this time for lunch at The Lobster Roll in Riverhead, where Olin was able to take a ride on a motorized train. It was his first ride of the kind and he wasn't sure if he loved it or hated it and so he alternated between shrieks of joy and cries of fear - he was quite the sight on that thing.
After lunch and a bit of a search, we found the bakery that we had visited a few years ago. The last time we were there we had the most incredible sweet potato pie (our first). I literally have dreams about this pie and have tried more times than I care to admit to recreate it at home without success. Well, unfortunately they don't make their sweet potato pie in the summer (apparently it's not the right season for it, but in my opinion every season is the right season for this pie) so we had to settle for a key lime tart and blueberry crumble bread - both of which were still great, but not quite the same. We did learn that they will have "our pie" beginning in September, so we already have a return trip scheduled for next month. I am not sure that there are many people out there that will drive four hours round trip for pie - Josh and I are so lucky to have found each other.
It wasn't all indulgent eating for us on Long Island, we also paid a visit to our favorite farm stand for some amazing fruits and vegetables (look at the size of that zucchini that Josh is holding in the photo below!) We really love this North Fork area - so much so, I was ready to look at some real estate. If only it was a little closer to NYC.
After our Long Island adventure, we Skyped (briefly) with Grandpa and Grandma. If anyone has tips on Skyping with a toddler, please let us know because it has become near impossible with little mister (Uncle Matt can attest to that) because he so badly wants to touch the computer and loses his mind when we don't let him.
Sunday was less exciting, but still fun and full of good eating. After church we got take-out from Dean & Deluca and gelato from Ciao Bella (both delicious) and had a sort of picnic on our favorite little bench on 92nd Street in our beloved Carnegie Hill neighborhood. Without fail, every time we sit there we dream up ways to make a lot of money so that we can buy one of the adorable brownstones on that block. Maybe someday it will actually happen (fingers crossed). We ended the day with some time in Riverside Park for Olin and the always sad trip to the parking garage to drop off our car for another week.
Hope everyone had a great weekend!
